The Reflex Answer
When a kick drum and a bass occupy the same frequency range and fight each other, sidechain compression is the reflex response, and it is frequently not the best available one.
The technique routes the kick to a compressor’s detector on the bass channel, so every kick hit momentarily reduces the bass level. The two stop competing because they are no longer sounding at full level simultaneously.
It works, which is why it became standard. The problem is that it is a loud, audible solution to a problem that arrangement usually solves better and more quietly.
What It Costs
Ducking has real side effects that are easy to stop noticing once you are used to hearing them.
The bass loses energy on every downbeat, which is exactly where a track usually needs weight. The resulting pump becomes a rhythmic feature whether or not that suits the material, and at heavy settings it dominates the groove.
It also removes the possibility of the two elements genuinely reinforcing each other. A kick and a bass note landing together can produce a combined weight that ducking specifically prevents.

Arrangement Is the Quieter Fix
The most effective solution is usually to stop the collision happening rather than to manage it after the fact.
If the bass does not play on the kick beats, there is nothing to duck. Writing a bass line that moves around the kick rather than with it produces separation with no processing at all, and it tends to produce a more interesting part.
That is how the problem was solved for decades before sidechain compression became routine, and it remains the approach that costs the least and gives the most control.
Frequency Separation Works Too
Where the parts must land together, the collision can be resolved in the frequency domain instead of the time domain.
Deciding that the kick owns the very low region and the bass sits above it, or the reverse, and filtering each accordingly, lets both sound simultaneously without competing. The choice depends on the genre and which element needs to carry the weight.
This preserves the combined impact of the two landing together, which is precisely what ducking sacrifices, and it does not impose a rhythmic pattern on the bass.

Dynamic EQ Is the Middle Path
There is an intermediate technique that gets far less use than it deserves: reducing only the conflicting frequency band of the bass when the kick hits, rather than the whole signal.
A dynamic equaliser or a multiband compressor triggered by the kick attenuates just the overlapping region for a few milliseconds. The bass keeps its upper harmonics and its perceived level while the actual conflict is removed.
The result is separation without the audible pump, which is usually what was wanted in the first place. It requires identifying the conflicting band, which takes a minute of listening rather than a preset.
Choosing Deliberately
The point is not that sidechain compression is wrong. In genres where the pump is a defining rhythmic element, it is the correct choice and should be obvious rather than hidden.
The problem is applying it automatically to every project regardless of whether the effect suits the music, which is what happens when a technique becomes a default.
Working through the options in order — change the arrangement, then separate by frequency, then duck only the conflicting band, then duck the whole signal — arrives at the loudest solution only when the quieter ones have genuinely failed.
