Summer Shame: F. Scott’s Unearthly Opening Notes and Where They Went

Summer Shame: F. Scott's Unearthly Opening Notes and Where They Went

Gabriel Burke’s Guelph Project Turns a Slow, Spacious Intro Into a Pop Groove

Summer Shame opens on long, sustained notes that hang in the air before any beat arrives. F. Scott, the project of Guelph, Ontario songwriter Gabriel Burke, released the single on 8 September 2022. The song later became track seven of the ten-track album Scotty Season.

F. Scott’s Summer Shame sits in the playlist below, so press play and let the intro run, while past features sit on the F. Scott artist profile. The single came to this desk through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news desks. Listen first, then keep reading for how Gabriel Burke built it.

The Production Choice Hiding in the First Seconds

That opening is a deliberate production choice, and it pays off. York Calling described the song as starting in a meditative fashion, with long, unearthly notes, before it hits a pop groove. In other words, the track makes you wait. Then the groove lands, and the wait makes it hit harder.

The credits are short and clear. Burke wrote and performed Summer Shame, and he produced it with James Florio, who also mixed and mastered the track. The single runs to 4 minutes 48 seconds, which is long for an alternative pop song. As a result, the slow intro has room to breathe before the hook takes over. The name is personal, too: the project’s SoundCloud bio explains that F. Scott is his dad’s name, and that everything is DIY, with help from friends.

The vocal sits in a cool register. York Calling heard it as chilled yet emotional and singled out the impact of the instrumental hook. Meanwhile, Tape Ranger called the single catchy, with a melodic vocal over a well-produced instrumental. The blog also added it to its Indie POP! playlist on Spotify.

York Calling traced the project’s influences to Kanye West, Chance The Rapper and Bon Iver. Those names help place this piece of art pop. For example, Bon Iver’s 22, A Million built songs out of processed voices and long, hovering tones, and Summer Shame borrows that sense of space for its opening. Similarly, Kanye West made 808s & Heartbreak by setting hurt, plain-spoken lyrics against cold machine pop. F. Scott does something comparable when a bruised lyric meets a bright electronic pop groove.

The Lyric of Summer Shame Runs From Smog and Parked Cars to a Stolen Heart

The words are worth reading closely. Burke publishes them with the album, and they start in the heat. The opening verse sits in parked cars on a hot day, with smog on the narrator’s shoulders, and names that feeling summer shame. Then the story turns. A car is stolen, and a heart goes with it.

The second verse is darker. This time the thieves beat both the narrator and the narrator’s father. The chorus answers with a picture of running away, because, in the lyric’s own image, the teachers are being taught to teach everyone to run.

After that, the song changes tone. A short litany follows, built on lines that begin with we are not: not gold, not cold, not whole, not full. Each half of it ends on a turn towards love, first a promise to love impartially, then entirely. Finally, the last verse flips the opening. Now the narrator is the one who stole the car and took the heart, and the song closes on a wish to begin again.

Summer Shame Sits Seventh on Scotty Season, Just Before the Short Interlude Called II

On the album, Summer Shame sits seventh, just before a short piece called II. Scotty Season mixes full songs with three brief pieces titled I, II and III, so the single arrives as a complete pop song among shorter sketches. When York Calling covered it in September 2022, Burke planned to release the album in parts over the following months. The full record arrived on Bandcamp on 8 December 2022.

Other players appear elsewhere on the album. Shawn Fisher adds violin to several tracks, and Nathan Klassen plays trumpet on Sweet Serenity. By contrast, Summer Shame keeps its credits to Burke and Florio alone, which suits a song this focused on one voice and one groove.

From the ElectroPop.News curator team: “Play the opening of Summer Shame twice. The long notes at the top set up a wait, and the groove that follows is the payoff. It is a simple production idea, carried out with patience, and it is why the hook sticks.”

Who Summer Shame Is For

This single suits listeners who like art pop with a slow build and a lyric that rewards attention. It also suits anyone who has followed Bon Iver into quieter electronic sounds, or who wants alternative pop that takes its time.

Follow F. Scott across platforms: Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, SoundCloud, YouTube channel, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Linktree.
