Beat The Drum Turn the Phone in Your Pocket Into the Ghost Machine

A London Duo Swaps Muted Trumpet for Urgent Guitar on a Song About Scrolling

The first thing Ghost Machine changes is the lead instrument: Beat The Drum have put an electric guitar in front. The London duo spent much of 2026 on downtempo singles carried by muted trumpet, double bass and electric piano. Out since 25 September, this one pairs urgent guitar with a pulsing electronic rhythm and turns it on the habit of scrolling.

Beat The Drum’s new single is in the playlist below, and the duo’s full coverage history sits on the Beat The Drum profile. Ghost Machine reached ElectroPop.News through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news titles. Give it a spin, then read on.

Beat The Drum Hang Ghost Machine on a Hook That Keeps Saying You’re Just a Click Away

Steve Murrell plays that guitar and Chris Calloway sings. The two wrote the song together and produced it themselves, at the studio they keep on the edge of London. In their own notes they describe the sound as urgent electric guitar over a pulsating rhythm with an electronic edge, and they also call the single loud.

The hook is built from repetition, which suits a song about refreshing a feed. “You’re just a click away” runs three times back to back, and the chorus then brings it round twice. Before it comes a chant, “Just say yeah, yeah, yeah”, also sung three times. So the song keeps asking the listener to agree before it has finished explaining what they are agreeing to.

That is the craft in it. A hook that repeats the way a thumb repeats on a screen makes the argument before any verse does.

The Lyric of Ghost Machine Casts Beat The Drum’s Listener as the Dreamer Inside the Feed

The words come from Calloway and Murrell together, and they open like a fairground barker. The opening line welcomes the listener to the Ghost Machine, then calls it the creator of your nightmares and the destroyer of your dreams. Then it adds the promise every free app relies on: “It’s free to enter”.

The duo’s own note on the song puts the idea plainly. The ghost is something you carry in your pocket by choice, and it leaves you connected to everyone while drifting further from yourself. However, nothing in the lyric names a phone, a feed or an app, and it does not need to.

The middle of the lyric is where that lands. “It’s here in your mind again”, the song says, “you’ve been here since you don’t know when”. Then comes the line that describes every attempt to log off: “and then when you go out, you just come in again”.

The Second Pass Through Ghost Machine Turns the Dream Into Your Dream

On paper the structure is simple, while the clever part is in the details. The song runs its sections twice. On the second pass, “this is the dream” becomes “this is your dream”, and the nightmare line is gone. The escape route goes too. Where the first pass admits that you go out and come back in, the second simply ends “in the Ghost Machine”. The radio edit does all of this in a little over three minutes.

Gary Numan and Depeche Mode Show Where a Song Like Ghost Machine Comes From

Electronic pop has been writing about machines that stand in for people for a long time. Gary Numan took Are ‘Friends’ Electric? to number one in Britain in 1979 and kept it there for four weeks. He later described it as a song about a robot prostitute. Ten years later Depeche Mode, a band built on synthesisers, had a hit that started on an acoustic guitar: Martin Gore demoed Personal Jesus by tapping the beat with his foot while he played the melody. Ghost Machine sits between those two ideas, a song about a machine that keeps you company, led by a guitar in an electronic setting.

Calloway and Murrell are not newcomers either. Rock Era Magazine traced their careers back to the late 1980s and early 1990s when it reviewed their 2022 single It’s All Gonna Go, which Edgar Allan Poets also covered. This year they have released a run of downtempo singles, from High! in May to All You Needed in June. After that, Try A Little Bit Harder followed in July as a reworking of Try, their very first single. Each came with its own video on the duo’s channel.

ElectroPop.News’s curator team: “Plenty of songs complain about phones. Few make the chorus behave like the thing it describes, and Ghost Machine does, which is why it sits in our Dark Pop, Alt-Pop and Coldwave playlist.”

For listeners who like their alternative rock wired into electronics, and anyone who has refreshed a feed at two in the morning, this is the Beat The Drum single to start with.
