Harp Arpeggios and Small Synth Patches Carry Four Melancholy Songs From a Bedroom Universe

Harp arpeggios and a light synth melody share the opening song of The Mild West, and that pairing sets the rules for the whole record. Space Cowboy Newt, a Massachusetts singer, harpist and keyboardist, released the four-song EP on 1 February 2022. Four years on, it still plays like a small, carefully built world.

Space Cowboy Newt’s opening song sits in the playlist below, among the synth-led electropop this desk keeps in rotation, and the act’s coverage is collected on the Space Cowboy Newt artist profile. Their EP The Mild West reached ElectroPop.News through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news titles. Give it a listen, then keep reading for where those tiny synths went.

A Harpist and Audio Engineer Builds The Mild West From Small Synths and Gentle Arpeggios

Start with the person at the desk. Space Cowboy Newt works as an audio engineer and produces music for other artists at Big Nice Studio. That day job shows on The Mild West. In its 2022 review, Sinusoidal Music noted that the artist writes, records, mixes, engineers, produces, performs and masters their own music. Meanwhile, FVMusicBlog reported that the EP was recorded at The Record Company in Boston. At the time, the artist was also a student at Berklee College of Music.

The concept is just as specific. In an interview with HipHop Paranoia, Space Cowboy Newt described the EP as a meeting of botanicals, outer space and dream states. It takes place in a faraway universe called The Mild West. There, cowboys of all genders gather in saloons, drink herbal tea and play with tiny synthesizers. The same interview summed up the sound in three words: dreamy, shimmery and space-y.

Those small synthesizers matter. In the reviews, the synth parts come across as light and serene rather than showy. That leaves room for the harp and the voice. Sinusoidal Music also heard light, jazzy percussion keeping Olivetree moving underneath.

What the Songs Say Under the Shimmer, From Botanical Titles to Grim Lyrics About Past Sadness

The surface is gentle, but the writing is not. Sinusoidal Music heard grim and bleak lyrics under the dreamy arrangement of Olivetree, and it called the EP serenely melancholic. Speaking to FVMusicBlog, the artist described the record as a merging of the terrestrial and the cosmic. Its botanical imagery helps describe past sadness, cope with it and move on.

You can hear that plan in the titles. Olivetree, Goodnight Dandelion and I’m Still Not Blooming all reach for plants. The last of those titles is the clearest statement on the record. It names growth that has not happened yet, and it says so plainly.

Four Songs in Fifteen Minutes, From Olivetree’s Harp to the Synth Piano Closing the EP

The structure is compact. The EP runs for just over fifteen minutes across four tracks, and each one adds a different colour to the same small palette.

Olivetree opens at three minutes and fourteen seconds. Indie Dock Music Blog heard it shimmer with gentle harp arpeggios and melodic vocal lines. Goodnight Dandelion follows in under three minutes. FVMusicBlog pointed to its layered instrumentation, unexpected chord progressions and stacked vocals, while Sinusoidal Music heard light strings lifting it.

Looking Down at the Earth is the longest idea so far, at four minutes and twenty-four seconds. In the HipHop Paranoia interview, the artist chose it as the song that best represents them, a mashup of weird little synths and angelic harp. Reviewers noticed the shift too. Halfway through, the track picks up into a brighter pop groove before settling again.

Finally, I’m Still Not Blooming closes the EP at four minutes and thirty-six seconds. It opens on a lone synth piano before the harmonies arrive, and FVMusicBlog singled out the breathy lead vocal. Indie Dock Music Blog compared its warmth to a jazz standard.

Where The Mild West Went Next, and Who Should Queue Up Space Cowboy Newt’s Bedroom Synths

The sound kept travelling. Since the EP, Space Cowboy Newt has released a run of singles, including out there, haberdashery and salt lamp in 2024, followed by the album Suffering!!! in May 2025. Today the artist performs around Rhode Island and Massachusetts and describes the project as dream pop built on classical-style harp playing.

This EP suits listeners who like their synth-pop small, soft and handmade. The artist has named Salami Rose Joe Louis, Beach House and Mac DeMarco among their influences. Salami Rose Joe Louis builds space-themed songs from jazz chords and home-programmed synths, as on the Brainfeeder album Zdenka 2080. That makes it the closest map to this record’s cosmic setting. Beach House, another named influence, wraps slow songs in organ and keyboard drones.

From the ElectroPop.News curator team: “Four years on, The Mild West still sounds handmade. The synth parts work like weather around the harp, and that restraint is why a record about tiny synthesizers never feels small.”
