The Retro Synth Sound and Where 90s Double Vision Takes It

An Irish Vocalist and a Brazilian Composer Build a Nocturnal Pop Record Across Two Continents

The hook on 90s Double Vision arrives on a synth patch that could have come off a record from thirty years ago, and then does not behave like one. It shimmers, it repeats, and it never swells. Darkroom Data released the single on 10 July 2026, and the whole three minutes fifteen rests on that one restraint.

Darkroom Data’s music is in the playlist below, and the pair’s coverage is indexed on the Darkroom Data artist profile. 90s Double Vision reached this desk through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news sites. Queue it up, then read on for the detail.

What the Synths on 90s Double Vision Do, and What They Refuse to Do

Retro synth textures are cheap now. Any producer can load a preset that sounds like 1994 and let it carry a chorus. What is harder is using one without letting the reference do the emotional work for you.

90s Double Vision uses its patches as reference points rather than as the point. The pads glow rather than pulse, the rhythmic movement stays understated instead of driving, and the layering stays careful enough that no single sound has to be the event. No Transmission heard the same thing, describing glowing synths, understated rhythmic movement and carefully layered detail across an expansive nocturnal landscape, and calling the arrangement spacious without becoming cold.

That spaciousness is the production decision the whole track rests on. There is a version of this song that fills every bar, doubles the vocal on the last chorus and drops out into a big final lift. This is not that version. So the arrangement clears room and then leaves it open, which is why the vocal lands.

The finishing is where the outside help came in. Márcio Paz produced it, and the duo took it to Nicolas Essig for the final engineering. Essig is an award-winning engineer whose credits run to Lana Del Rey, Daft Punk and Madonna. That is a serious name for an independent single, and you hear what it bought in the low end and the stereo width rather than in loudness.

The Lyric Underneath the Shimmer, and the Structure That Serves It

Play it once and it registers as a warm nocturnal pop song. Read the lyric and it is about the cost of opening up to someone.

The duo frame it as loving dangerously in 2026: urban isolation, the wish for connection at any cost, and the discovery that the risk is where the new perspectives are. Gillian NoVa sings it without dramatising it, which is the correct call. A song about guarding yourself while wanting to be known does not need belting.

The structure follows the same logic. There is no explosive chorus because the song is not about resolution. The melodic core is quietly addictive rather than immediate, and the track ends roughly the size it started. Mesmerized put the register well, calling it kinetic and retro with a charge to it, drawing heavily on past decades while wrapping the result in a contemporary sheen.

The video does the local half of the work. They shot it around Waterford: the wall art, the Tramore amusement park and promenade, Luca Records, the Apple market. Then the edit cuts all of that against vintage 90s footage from an 84-year-old local, John Flynn. The nostalgia in the title turns out to have an actual source rather than a filter.

The ElectroPop.News curator team: “The tell here is what happens on the last chorus, which is nothing. No doubled vocal, no added octave, no fresh layer. Most synth-pop treats the final eight bars as the payoff. This treats them as the same size as everything else, and the song is better for the discipline.”

Where to Hear 90s Double Vision and the Rest of Darkroom Data

Darkroom Data are Gillian NoVa, an Irish vocalist based in Waterford, and Márcio Paz, a Brazilian composer. They wrote the song across the two countries and finished it in the studio, which explains a catalogue that keeps sounding like two places at once.

It follows Fall With You and First Echo, and the duo have picked up support from Nialler9 and EARMILK along the way, and 2fm named two of their previous tracks song of the week. Meanwhile the track lands on the soundtrack of a 2027 short film by Irish director Oonagh Quinn, and they have live dates planned for the same year.

90s Double Vision is on Spotify and the catalogue sits on Bandcamp. The duo post on Instagram, on Facebook and on X, Gillian NoVa keeps her own Instagram, the videos are on their YouTube channel, and their Linktree collects everything current.
