A Dance and Hip-Hop Single Dedicated to the Survivors of Disaster, Natural and Man-Made

Hold Me Close Now! stacks dance beats, contemporary hip-hop and a pop chorus into one high-energy track. Then it dedicates the whole thing to people who have lived through disaster. Gloria May Byron released it on 13 September. She is an Ojibwe singer-songwriter from Garden River First Nation, now based on Canada’s Atlantic side.

Gloria May Byron’s Hold Me Close Now! now plays in the playlist below, alongside our dance pop and vocal house picks. Her coverage so far is collected on her artist profile. The single reached this desk through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news titles. Hit play, then read on.

In fact, that mix is a change of lane. Byron is usually filed under contemporary pop, dream pop and indie pop, in a style her own profile describes as guitar-led, dreamy and mellow. This single, however, swaps the guitar haze for a dance-floor tempo built for workouts, parties and short-form video.

The hook does the work a big chorus should. The pop chorus is the easy way in, while the hip-hop elements and the dance beat set the pace around it. On SoundClick, where much of her catalogue lives, the track is tagged for EDM and hip-hop alike, and she is listed there as a dance-pop artist.

Gloria May Byron Wrote Hold Me Close Now! for Everyone Who Has Lived Through Disaster and Loss

The dedication sits under both the SoundClick upload and the lyric video. The song is for everyone around the world who has lost and endured disaster trauma, natural and man-made, and for the people inspired to make sacrifices on their behalf.

As a result, the high tempo has a purpose. Much of the lyric starts from real accounts of what people went through, and from how they came through it on the strength of the human spirit. So a dance track that could be pure escape reads instead as celebration used as comfort, a reason to hold on to the people around you. The SoundClick tags spell out the vocabulary: love, faith, hope, truth and encouragement.

It also fits the values her website puts at the top of every page: love, hope, peace, truth, encouragement and unity. The site describes music rooted in storytelling and lived experience, shaped by her Ojibwe heritage and a multigenerational musical lineage. By the site’s own count, her music has reached listeners in more than 200 countries.

Five Singles in Five Days Frame Hold Me Close Now! by Gloria May Byron and Its Longer Build

The release plan is a craft decision of its own. Byron put out five singles on five consecutive days in September: New Dawn, Glass Face, Hold Me Close Now!, Let My Heart Stay Free! and You Are Love. The lyric video for Hold Me Close Now! went up on her VEVO channel on 12 September, the day before the single landed on Spotify and Apple Music. Apple Music files it under Hip-Hop/Rap, while the singles either side of it sit under Pop and Rock. In other words, the run shows off her range in a single week.

Meanwhile, the track itself takes its time. It runs 4 minutes and 41 seconds, well past the three-minute mark most dance-pop singles aim for, which gives the chorus room to come round again and again.

Her catalogue has a habit of travelling, too. Earlier singles have been recut in special Arabic, Punjabi and Hindi editions, and her collaborators range from Harry & The British Boys UK to James Tanner UK.

Where the Hip-Hop Dance-Pop Sound Went Next

The sound itself has a clear lineage. First, Black Eyed Peas showed with Where Is the Love? in 2003 that a hip-hop pop record could carry a message about suffering in the world without losing its hook. Six years later, The E.N.D. took the same mix of rap and pop straight onto the dance floor. Later, Macklemore kept the idea moving, since Glorious, from 2017, paired hip-hop verses with a big sung chorus about gratitude. Hold Me Close Now! is where that sound has gone next, with a dance beat and a pop chorus carrying a dedication to survivors.

Overall, it suits workout and party playlists, and anyone who wants their dance-pop to stand for something. Listeners who follow artists for what they say as well as how they sound will get the most from it. Start with the chorus, then read the dedication and play it again.

From the ElectroPop.News Curator Team: “The cover shows an older figure with their face in their hands in front of burning buildings, and the song answers that picture with a dance beat and a chorus. Grief on the sleeve and hope in the music is the contrast that earned Hold Me Close Now! a slot in our rotation.”

Find Gloria May Byron on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer and Tidal, watch on her YouTube channel, and follow her on Instagram, TikTok, X and Facebook, or visit her official website.
