A 2018 Dream Pop Single Built From Programmed Drums, Synth Pads and a Floating Vocal

A drum machine drives Feels Like Heaven, while lush synth pads hang above it. MΛDLY released the independent dream pop single on 6 April 2018, and a wistful, romantic vocal completes its 80s-style arrangement. At just under five minutes, it is an easy way into the sound of the project.

MΛDLY’s music is in the playlist below, and every feature so far is collected on the MΛDLY artist profile. Feels Like Heaven reached ElectroPop.News through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news sites. Put it on with headphones first, then keep reading for how the machines behind it fit together.

The Programmed Drum Pattern and Synth Pads That Carry the Hook of This 2018 Dream Pop Single

Programmed drums were the sound of early 1980s pop. Machines such as the Roland TR-808 and the LinnDrum moved the beat from a live kit to a sequenced pattern, and synth pads took over the space a rhythm guitar used to fill. Feels Like Heaven uses that same pairing. The drum machine pushes forward, and the pads sustain long, soft chords over it.

That contrast is the hook. The rhythm gives the track momentum, while the pads hold still, so the record moves without ever sounding rushed. As a result, the single suits late-night listening far better than a crowded dance floor.

Dream pop has worked this way since the 1980s. The genre keeps the drums simple and steady, then lets the keyboards and the voice blur together on top. MΛDLY follows that template closely, which is why Feels Like Heaven sits as comfortably on a retro synth playlist as on a dream pop or indie pop one.

The Ethereal Vocal on Feels Like Heaven Follows a Dream Pop Rule That Dates Back to the 1980s

The vocal delivery is the second layer of the craft. Dream pop singers rarely push to the front of the mix. Instead, they float, and the words matter as much for their sound as for their meaning. On Feels Like Heaven, the delivery is airy and unhurried, which suits a title that describes a feeling rather than telling a story.

The mood is wistful and romantic. The title promises calm, yet the drum machine never stops moving underneath it, and that small tension gives the single its pull. Listeners hear contentment and restlessness at the same time, which is the emotional trick dream pop has always relied on.

Nearly Five Minutes of Feels Like Heaven, From the Drum Pattern to the Final Synth Pad

The single runs 4 minutes 56 seconds, long for a pop record and right for this one. That length gives the pads room to breathe. A three-minute radio edit would cut exactly the drift that makes the genre work.

On Spotify, where the project is listed as Madly, Feels Like Heaven sits in a run of five singles: Spinning (2014), Promises (2015), Feels Like Heaven and Desert Vibes (both 2018), and On Display (2019). Desert Vibes followed four and a half months later, so 2018 was the busiest year on that page. In other words, this is the single at the centre of the catalogue, and the best place to start.

Where Fans of Cocteau Twins, M83 and Beach House Should Start With MΛDLY

Three acts explain the appeal. Cocteau Twins pioneered dream pop in the 1980s, with Robin Guthrie on drum machine and Elizabeth Fraser’s voice floating over the top. Their album Heaven or Las Vegas (1990) became their most successful in the UK. M83, the French electronic band, stacked layer upon layer of keys over big drums on Midnight City (2011), and the same synth-first instinct drives Feels Like Heaven. Finally, Beach House, the Baltimore duo, set Alex Scally’s drum programming under Victoria Legrand’s keyboards, and Teen Dream (2010) became their breakthrough.

None of those names is a claim of influence. Instead, they are a map for listeners in the US, the UK and Canada who build late-night playlists around programmed drums and soft synths, and who want an independent name to add to them.

ElectroPop.News curator team: “Feels Like Heaven trusts three things to do all the work: a drum machine that never lets up, synth pads that never hurry, and a voice that floats between them. Play it after midnight, on headphones.”

Feels Like Heaven is out now on Spotify.
