How a Nashville Producer Who Plays in the Band Built a Four-Minute Single

Start with one line on the credit list. Chris Kuskey produced Don’t Whisper. He is also the guitarist standing beside Sarah Giles at her Nashville shows. That is not a footnote. It changes what an arrangement is allowed to assume about the singer. The single arrived on 13 April 2026, self-released through Symphonic Distribution, with Giles credited as sole composer and lyricist.

You can listen to our full playlist which contains the artist’s music, and know more about the artist’s work by scrolling down the page.

What Changes When Sarah Giles Lets Her Guitarist Produce

Usually a singer-songwriter record starts with a booking. You send demos out, you meet a producer in a control room, and the first day goes on learning what the other one hears. That day costs money and it costs takes.

Kuskey skipped it, because he already plays these songs. In fact he knows where the voice opens up, which tempo she breathes at, and how long she can hold a line before the band has to move. As a result, an arrangement built on that knowledge does not have to hedge.

His stated method backs it up. On his own production notes he describes nine years of engineering and producing across hard rock, small-group jazz, folk and avant-garde classical, and he puts the priorities in order: reach for the best performance, get the right mic in the right place, then worry about signal processing. In other words, that is a performance-first chain rather than a repair-it-later one. It suits a singer whose training shows in phrasing, not in edits.

The two have a joint credit on record as well. Kingdom Come, released in September 2024, is filed as featuring Chris Kuskey and Sarah Giles together. In short, this is a working duo rather than a hire.

The Four-Minute Decision

The length is the proof. Don’t Whisper runs four minutes and sixteen seconds. For a 2026 pop single that is a decision, and it only works if the arrangement earns the time.

There are two ways to fill four minutes. You repeat, or you open up in stages. For example, repetition makes a track feel twice as long. By contrast, staged dynamics carry a listener to the end without them checking the counter. Giles wrote a song that needs room to grow; Kuskey built a record that gives it to her.

There is a second consequence, and independent artists usually miss it. A producer who tours with you has to make a record you can reproduce on stage. Nothing here is a studio trick that dies without a laptop, which is why the song survives the trip back to a live set. That is where Giles has always made her case.

Her own account of the song points the same way.

Sarah Giles on the single: “I believe music has the power to unite and inspire us to be our most courageous selves. With ‘Don’t Whisper,’ I wanted to create a space where people feel seen, heard, and empowered to use their voices for good.”

Above all, a space other people can enter is a structural requirement rather than a sentiment. It means a chorus pitched where a room can sing it, and an arrangement that leaves a gap for them to sing into.

From Akron to a Nashville Art Gallery

The background explains the voice. Giles came from Akron, Ohio and calls Nashville home. She describes her own blend as sultry soul, jazz-influenced melodies and powerhouse pop vocals, and files the project under alt-pop, neo-soul and indie-folk. Her live set runs from an Ella or Sinatra standard to a Stevie Nicks or Stevie Wonder cover to a top-40 song rebuilt in her own style. That is a standards singer’s ear working under a pop chorus, and you can hear it in how she lands the ends of lines.

The catalogue shows the same instinct scaling up. Dreaming in Different Colors arrived in May 2019 on a classic pop and R&B backdrop. Then Burning Letters followed in April 2022, eight songs written out of her pandemic, and she released it as a collaborative art project: local visual artists each made a piece in response to a first listen-through, and the launch was an Album Release Art Gallery Concert with a silent auction of the results. After that, a Holiday EP landed in November 2023, and the single Instructions on How to Be a Cloud in June 2024.

Who to Play It Next To

Read that arc back and the through-line is obvious. Giles keeps building things a room has to finish.

For listeners mapping the shelf, the nearest neighbours are guitar-led soul singers rather than pop producers. Lianne La Havas is the closest match for the method, a writer whose jazz phrasing sits over her own guitar and whose records keep the performance in front of the production. Meanwhile, Brittany Howard covers the power end, a voice that carries a chorus without the arrangement shouting underneath it. Michael Kiwanuka is the reference for scale, soul songwriting that grows into something communal without losing the person singing it. None of that makes Giles derivative. It locates the shelf she is reaching for.

Finally, on the evidence of this single, the working relationship is the asset. A producer who already knows the singer from the stage is worth more to an independent artist than a bigger name who has to learn her from a demo.
